A cornerstone of life in the Royal Docks for nearly 140 years, the Tate & Lyle Sugars factory launched a new line of syrup this month, the result of an £8 million investment in their Plaistow Wharf factory in Knights Road.
The launch was marked by an opening event for pensioners, charities and local councillors, including Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales.
The company has also launched a £25,000 community fund for local schools, community groups and not-for-profit organisations, whose work benefits the residents of Newham.
Grants of up to £2,500 will be available when the scheme, co-run with Newham Council, becomes available in November.
As befits the co-sponsor of The Great British Bake Off, the launch was awash with tea and cakes of all description, with entertainment provided by members of Brick Lane Music Hall.
